Residents can have say on Coast dump
TIME is running out for ratepayers to have their say about a new super dump at West Burleigh, destined to be the biggest of its kind on the Gold Coast.
Council is in the final stages of planning for the facility and comments close September 13.
The plan is to open a 198,000sq m public recycling and waste transfer station at the former M&M Quarry, next to a commercial landfill and recycling centre at Reedy Creek on Hutchinson Street.
A council spokeswoman said the super dump would include a refuse transfer station, salvage yard and recycled goods shop.
She said it was part of the council's initiative to recycle more and cut the amount of rubbish being sent to landfills.
The project has been on the cards for several years and the site was bought by the council two years ago -- it already had approval to be a landfill.
If it gets a green light, the tip could open as soon as July and is linked to the closure of smaller transfer stations such as those at Miami, Mudgeeraba and Tugun.
Palm Beach councillor Daphne McDonald said although some other waste transfer stations may close, no plans had been finalised.
