Weighing in on waste levy
Stage one of the Kelsey Creek Resource Recovery Facility is now complete, with the addition of a modern weighbridge and areas to collect recycling material declared operational last week.
The installation of the weighbridge was a requirement under new Queensland state government waste laws, with the introduction of a waste levy coming into effect on December 1.
According to the terms of the new levy, the cost of disposing of general commercial waste at the landfill has increased by $35 per tonne.
Mayor Mike Brunker said council would endeavour to help keep costs down by working with small businesses to identify waste streams and opportunities to increase recycling.
"A positive and proactive step that council can take is to work with local businesses to try to minimise the levy's impact whilst also minimising waste," Cr Brunker said.
