Every bin has two limits, and weight is the one that bites
A skip bin is sold by volume, in cubic metres. It is tipped by weight, in tonnes. Those are two separate limits and the load stops at whichever one it reaches first.
A 4m³ bin filled with couches, boxes and a mattress will fill up long before it gets heavy. The same bin filled with tiles and old bricks will hit its weight limit with the bin barely half full, and anything over the included tonnage is charged by the tonne on top.
That is why the answer to “which size” depends on what you are throwing out, not just how much of it there is:
Light and bulky
Furniture, boxes, garden clippings, insulation. Buy volume. Go a size up if you are between two.
Heavy and dense
Soil, bricks, tiles, concrete, plaster. Buy weight. Go a size down and fill it properly, because you will pay for the excess long before you run out of room. This is why the concrete only bins are the small ones.
