What goes in and what does not

What goes in a general waste bin

Household rubbish, furniture, whitegoods with the doors off, cardboard, clothing, toys, garden waste mixed in with the rest

The rule of thumb is that if it came out of a house and it is not on the banned list, it goes in. Old furniture, mattresses, whitegoods, garden waste mixed in with everything else, timber, cardboard, clothing.

Whitegoods and mattresses. Household rubbish, furniture, whitegoods with the doors off, cardboard, clothing, toys, garden waste mixed in with the rest Mention them when you book. They take up a lot of room for their weight, so they change the size we recommend even when they do not change the price.

What does not go in it

Asbestos, liquids, paint, batteries, gas bottles, tyres, chemicals, and anything on the sitewide banned list

Beyond that, the sitewide banned list applies to every bin we drop off, and it is on the waste types page. Asbestos is on it and it is not negotiable.

Can you mix things

Yes, and that is the point of this stream. It is the only one where mixing is allowed, and it is why it costs what it costs. The other four bins are cheaper or dearer because their contents are predictable. Clean green gets mulched. Clean concrete gets crushed.

Where it goes

A licensed Brisbane transfer station, where the load is sorted and the recoverable part is pulled out before landfill

If your load is genuinely one thing, do not book this bin

A yard full of prunings and nothing else belongs in green waste only, and it is cheaper for exactly the reason above.

What happens if the load is wrong

The load gets reclassified and charged at the heavy waste rate, and you are told before it happens

General waste is the forgiving stream, so this comes up less here than anywhere else. The one thing that will still cause a problem is a banned item hiding in the middle of the load. Paint tins, gas bottles and car batteries turn a routine tip run into a rejected load, and the bin comes back.

Which size suits a general waste load

2m3 through to 12m3, and most household jobs land on a 4m3 or a 6m3

Household rubbish is bulky and light, so volume is what you are buying. The three that cover most jobs:

3m³

One room, a garage, a unit

Weight is rarely the limit on this stream, which is unusual. The bin usually fills first. That is the opposite of every other waste type we run, and it is worth knowing before you pick a size.

If the load is genuinely mixed, this is your bin and the only thing left to settle is the size.
